The Two Roads

For some time prior to 1959 I had entered into a correspondence with Raynor C. Johnson, because I had been struck with a similarity between the conclusions of the Summary and some of the ideas in his books. He became interested in the Summary which I sent to him, but after some correspondence had passed between us, we arrived at what he felt to be a fundamental difference of opinion. For he accepted the fact that a Conscious Mind can be born on earth sometimes as a man and sometimes as a woman, whereas our Teaching contends that if you come to earth as a woman you will continue to do so for all your lives on earth. The same is true for a man. This point has its origin in the necessary balance between the Sphere of the Heart and the Sphere of the Mind, and is fully explained in the Summary.

I think myself in matters of this kind, that the many points in which we saw truth from the same angle, far outweigh a single point of difference, for such an obstruction is often removed by time and a wider understanding. Then one of our new members admitted she had personally experienced the absorption of herself into a greater Group Soul, an idea expressed in one of Raynor Johnson's books. As such an experience seemed to have no place in our Teaching, it rather perturbed some other members of our group, and so I thought it was time I sought in the Thought World for a solution to these difficulties.

In January 1959, we were given the answer to these problems. Then the new knowledge of the two Ways to the Light was given, which to avoid confusion with the Ways of Truth, Beauty and Service, we have called Roads:

Previously we had assumed, although it had never been confirmed, that our Teaching applied to the whole of mankind. Although this new idea caused a great difference in our outlook, there was nothing in it that upset or contradicted any knowledge that we had already received.

To understand the origin of the two Roads it is necessary to go back to the interim between this cycle and the previous cycle to this, both being a part of Progressive Creative Personality. For you know that this present cycle consists of the Thought World, the earth and the Split Personality, and that it is only one stage in our Return Journey to the Light.

Previous cycles in this experiment in personality have all had some goal to be achieved before the next stage of progress could be attempted, and this achievement of knowledge and understanding was always attained by the effort, will and desire of the individual concerned.

We know little about the cycle preceding this present one, but we do know that during it some of our Eternal Minds learnt that the Way of Truth led them to the Light, others learnt that the Way of Beauty led them to the same goal, and others that the Way of Service also led them there. Whilst they were learning these three lessons separately, all Eternal Minds on any of the three Ways, had an opportunity of forming the relationship of Unities, with an Eternal Mind on the same Way as its own, one of the Masculine Principle with one of the Feminine Principle. At the same time they were free to fail to make this relationship, because all through this conception of personality, all achievement must be won under the free-will of the individual.

In the interim between the preceding cycle and the present one, these Eternal Minds from all three Ways met for the first time. They met in order to learn of the next stage of their progress which they were to accomplish together. These were the Eternal Minds who had progressed sufficiently to know that their own Way led to the Light and had formed the relationship of Unities. Amongst these were many Eternal Minds, both of the Masculine and Feminine Principle, who had achieved this goal of understanding that their Way led to the Light, and who were themselves qualified for the relationship of Unities, but whose Unity Eternal Mind had failed to make this progress, and who either did not recognise, or who rejected that relationship. This left these Eternal Minds, through no fault of their own, bereft of a Unity and so not able to form a Group on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees in this present cycle.

One of our members of an earlier Circle, on being given the information relating to this Group System introduced for this cycle, expressed surprise that there were the exact numbers for it, that there were no odd numbers left over from the previous cycle. We were now to learn that there had been many such, indeed their number exceeded those Eternal Minds who were ready to form Groups.

Nevertheless, it is a proviso throughout this scheme of Progressive Creative Personality, that no progress attained by an individual should be lost. So, for this present cycle, preparation was made for these Eternal Minds. Most of the conditions, qualifications and limitations of this present cycle apply to all Eternal Minds on both Roads, and the aim and the goal of it is the same for all, but it is necessary now to recall one particular qualification for those on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees. This is the qualification drawing three pairs of Unity Eternal Minds, one pair from each of the three Ways, to form themselves into Groups. For it was this qualification that caused these many Eternal Minds who had made the necessary progress themselves, but whose Unity Eternal Minds had not, to be unable now to follow the Road of Azrael and Arrantees within this Group System, or as it is called in the Thought World, the Road of Direct Progressive Creative Personality. Therefore the Road of Buddha was made available for these Eternal Minds, the Road that is known in the Thought World as the Road of Progressive Creative Personality, and both Roads have an equal share of the Thought World, and of the earth, in this present cycle.

Thus continuance was assured to these Eternal Minds without Unities, who share equally with those on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees in all the future possibilities of Progressive Creative Personality. But this Road of Buddha is open only to those Eternal Minds who had attained their goal in the previous cycle and cannot be followed by those Eternal Minds, whose failure in their own progress had caused their Unities to leave the Road of Azrael and Arrantees.

At the same time as this new knowledge was given, there was a heavy emphasis laid on the fact that we must not form the wrong impression that the Road of Buddha is in any way inferior to the Road of Azrael and Arrantees. It is a different Road on which the individual does not continue in exactly the same manner, but it is an equal Way to the Light. It is very necessary for us to realise that all Eternal Minds belonging to either Road are completely satisfied, content and inspired, by the Road to which they belong, and that the fellowship between them is not marred by their following different Roads. We, as Conscious Minds, were urged to adjust ourselves to this idea.

The Roads of Azrael and Arrantees, and of Buddha, must not be confused with the religions of Christianity or Buddhism, for a Conscious Mind professing either religion, might be on the Road of Buddha, or on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees.

The Lord Buddha, also Azrael and Arrantees have all lived Their Lives on earth that They might, by Their example shed the light of Their wisdom and goodness for those who follow Them, but as with all religions, the purity and truth of Their conception has been considerably overlaid by the superstitions and dogmas of Their followers. Nevertheless both these religions remain a help and comfort to many Conscious Minds at certain stages of their progress.

The Life of the Conscious Mind of the Lord Buddha preceded the Life of the Lord Jesus and Mary, because His Life centred on the First Reflection, and through His Life on earth the purest conception of the Light has been given to man. Whereas the Life of the Lord Jesus and Mary was centred on the Second Reflection, and was a Master Pattern, lived to show all Conscious Minds the necessity to learn that although, through the acceptance of experience, and by their own desire, they must seek the Light, this search and their own progress in it, is dependent on the Way of Service. Their relationships of love and interest with other Conscious Minds with whom they are brought into contact, are inextricably woven into their own progress, or if ignored, with their failure to progress. For all must learn to recognise that their lives on earth must not be despised, but are in fact the school through which they must pass, in order to reach their goal.

You will find it much easier to understand the Road of Buddha, if you will remember that it has the same goal to attain, as those on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees. For whichever Road they took, the Eternal Minds of Truth, Beauty and Service were, at the beginning of this cycle, at the same stage. All had to accept the difficult condition of the Split Personality, all had the same lessons to learn, the same truth to accept, that the Ways of Truth, Beauty and Service are equal, and with the knowledge possible for them to gain in this cycle, these three Ways would be seen to merge into one Way. Also that all Eternal Minds at the end of this cycle should find the division of heart and mind eliminated. Therefore although in some particulars the method of acquiring this understanding is different, the goal is the same.

Azrael and Arrantees belong to the order of beings who share in the creative activity of the Light and are in direct communication with the Light, differing from our Eternal Minds, who belong to an order of beings ascending on their Return Journey to the Light, through this scheme of Progressive Creative Personality.

Conforming to the Will, Azrael and Arrantees descended to a lower Level of Consciousness, in order to assist our Eternal Minds in this present cycle, who had reached a stage of progress capable of ascending. It is not possible for any beings of a higher order to descend to a lower Level of Consciousness, until certain conditions are fulfilled on that lower Level, and these conditions must be achieved by the individuals on that lower Level.

Azrael and Arrantees, for this present cycle, accepted the position of Ruler and Director of the Thought World, over all Eternal Minds who are following Their Road, also accepting a like form of existence to our Eternal Minds in this cycle, but They retain the power to unite on leaving the Thought World, to communicate with the Light on Their own Level of Consciousness. The position of Azrael and Arrantees is unique, for They are of the Light. Prior to this descent, They had not been concerned in this scheme of Progressive Creative Personality, for there are many other creations of the Light of an entirely different nature.

Buddha is another being who shares the creative activity of the Light, and is also in direct communication. It is necessary to learn not to make any comparisons between beings of this high order, because the thought of superiority or inferiority between Them is ridiculous.

Buddha is a fully perfected being, but prior to this cycle was concerned in this scheme of Progressive Creative Personality, although the Eternal Minds who were without Unities, only joined His Road at the beginning of this cycle. It is the goal of those who follow His Road to become one with Him and thus to attain perfection.

When the Road of Buddha and the Road of Azrael and Arrantees came together in this cycle, Buddha and Azrael and Arrantees descended to the Level of Consciousness of the Thought World. Without knowing much of the detail of the Road of Buddha, I saw plainly that the Road has gifts compensating those Eternal Minds who joined it, (for the loss of their Unities) and that the Eternal Minds on either Road are greater or less in personality, according to their own efforts, and to the degree of progress they have achieved individually. Also there is interest, companionship and love between Eternal Minds on both Roads.

The main difference of method in attaining the same goal between the two Roads, is that on the Road of Direct Progressive Creative Personality (that of Azrael and Arrantees) there is no loss of individual personality, because there is no merging, or sharing of experience for those who are on it. For example, it would have been impossible for Kath to have received this Teaching other than through her own Eternal Mind. This condition enforces, on those who follow the Road of Azrael and Arrantees, the need for all knowledge and understanding to be gained personally by each part of the Split Personality, the Conscious Mind, the Supra-conscious Mind and the Eternal Mind.

Therefore, the marked difference between the two methods, is the ability of those on the Road of Buddha, under certain conditions, to share the experience of others. It may appear at first that this sharing of experience is an easier way of making progress, but you cannot share the experience of another on Buddha's Road just by accepting the gain of that experience. To grasp it fully you must share it completely, understand the mistakes that were made to acquire it, and learn in what manner they were overcome.

Most of the conditions of the Thought World apply to those on both Roads, but there is this salient difference which arises from the ability of those on the Road of Buddha to share experience, for the Conscious Minds on that Road can come to earth sometimes as a man and sometimes as a woman, according to which suits the progress of that Conscious Mind. Whereas the Conscious Minds on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees, as we were taught, come to earth always as a man, or always as a woman. This discovery cleared up that controversial point.

Again those on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees, because they have to gain their own experience, need that second part of the Split Personality known as the Supra-conscious Mind, one of whose main purposes is to retain the gains, and understanding, won by their Conscious Minds during their lives on earth, whereas those on the Road of Buddha do not need a Supra-conscious Mind.

It is not easy for me to see the details, but only to observe the broad purpose of the Road of Buddha, so that the following may be a poor translation. It seems to me that each Group on Buddha's Road is directed by a being of a higher order than those who form the Group and that these Groups vary greatly in construction, from those that include only a few members to those that include large numbers.

The being who directs the Group preserves the design and purpose of it, and knows how this should be accomplished. Whilst the Eternal Minds go forth from their Group and bring back their experience to that Group, the Conscious Minds, by their lives on earth gain their experience for the same purpose.

There is also an overall design that includes the Pattern of every Group, and if on the Road of Buddha some Eternal Minds have progressed so far as to perceive and understand this overall design, they have attained the highest Layer of the Fourth Level of Consciousness. They hold a complete understanding of this present cycle, can follow in the Thought World the evolution of the earth, its past, present and can foreshadow its future.

For the Levels of Consciousness exist exactly the same for those on the Road of Buddha, as for those on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees. Although a Conscious Mind on the Road of Buddha does not have a First Important Chapter, it cannot enter the Fourth Level of Consciousness until it has gained the same stage of progress, that its completion of the First Important Chapter gives to a Conscious Mind on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees. That is to say, a Conscious Mind, or an Eternal Mind on the Road of Buddha has to attain the same degree of knowledge and understanding, before entering each Layer and Level of Consciousness, as that of a Conscious Mind, or an Eternal Mind, on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees.

There is very little difference between a Conscious Mind on the Road of Buddha and one on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees before either are able to enter the Fourth Level of Consciousness, but once they have done that, a Conscious Mind on the Road of Buddha does differ in its method of progress. For such a Conscious Mind now begins to share in the experience gathered by the Eternal Minds in their Group, as far as their own understanding allows. This absorption of experience is only limited by the state of progress of that Conscious Mind, and by its own ability to understand it. Therefore at the end of each life on earth this ability should increase, until their progress reaches a stage in which they are able to give experience, as well as to receive it. In the final stage of their progress they become aware of their future union with Buddha, which is the final enlightenment on earth of a Conscious Mind on the Road of Buddha.

The Split Personality is a condition of this cycle, and perhaps it is the most exacting one, for on account of it Eternal Minds depend on their Conscious Minds completing their Books of lives. It is not possible for them to achieve the reunion of their Split Personality before this is accomplished. Therefore, because no Eternal Mind of either Road can reach the goal of this cycle without this reunion, they are dependent on the success of their Conscious Minds.

But it must not be forgotten that throughout this scheme of Progressive Creative Personality, whenever there are some who fail to achieve the final goal of each cycle, another way will be found for them, not to attain the same end as those who reach their goal, but one that is suited to their capabilities. For the extinction of any individual still desirous of seeking the Light, is inconceivable.

Such an end could only occur in a case similar to the Conscious Mind of an Unfinished Book, such as can happen in this cycle. A Conscious Mind who voluntarily, in spite of all the help given, loses all desire to seek the Light, so that finally the Nucleus given it by the Light, passes to the new Conscious Mind, who also acquires such gains as have already been attained. What is left drifts to the Force of Evil, finally to vanish because without the Light, there is no life.

The Road of Direct Progressive Creative Personality and the Road of Progressive Creative Personality were both created for this cycle, and those who successfully attain the goal of this cycle on either Road, will continue together in this scheme of Progressive Creative Personality, whilst those who fail will follow another route better suited to their capabilities.

Still it seems obvious that as the Road of Buddha was needed for those Eternal Minds without a Unity for this cycle, some similar bridge for continuance will be necessary for the next cycle. For only those Groups on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees, in which all three pairs of Unities attain their goal, will be able to continue on the Road of Direct Progressive Creative Personality. Whereas it seems as if there might be many Groups wherein two or perhaps only one pair of Unities achieve their goal. So that again there will be Eternal Minds who, through no fault of their own, cannot continue along the Road of Direct Progressive Creative Personality, and again a bridge will be found for their continuance with those other Eternal Minds whose Groups attained their goal.

We have already perceived the vast expanding reaches of new knowledge our Eternal Minds can discover on the higher Layers of the Fourth Level of Consciousness in this cycle. We have also had glimpses of the Fifth Level of Consciousness, which gives us some idea of the progress available to our Eternal Minds, but it is not really possible for a Conscious Mind to know what will happen at the end of this cycle, or to form an idea of what will be disclosed to our Eternal Minds in that interval before the next cycle begins, but our imaginations can wonder if their future progress will be connected with interstellar experience.

After we had received this knowledge of the Road of Buddha, someone asked: "Why did Jesus say: ''I am the Door, no man cometh to the Father but by Me.'?" And this was the answer given: - "He was speaking to His disciples and through them to those who were to follow His Teaching. That does not mean that Jesus was unaware of the Road of Buddha, there were several occasions when He said He would not reveal knowledge for which man was not yet ready."

All Conscious Minds in the Thought World, to whichever Road they belonged, would be aware of Buddha as well as Azrael and Arrantees, and when they were able to enter the Fourth Level of Consciousness it would be necessary for them to learn and to understand the meaning of both Roads, and of their interactions. If then, a Conscious Mind belonged to the Road of Azrael and Arrantees, it must now learn of the Life lived on earth by the Lord Buddha, and so give Him due reverence. If a Conscious Mind reaching this stage belonged to the Road of Buddha, it must likewise learn of the Life lived on earth of the Lord Jesus and Mary, and so give Them due reverence. So that the Conscious Mind on the Road of Buddha, would at that stage live a life on earth as a Christian, which would give it an opportunity of learning what the Lord Jesus taught, whilst a Conscious Mind on the Road of Azrael and Arrantees would at the same stage live a life as a Buddhist, and thus naturally learn to reverence the founder of its religion. During these lives both would look for help to the founder of the religion which they professed in that life and both, for that life, would so receive it. After those lives on earth, when they returned to the Thought World, they would both hold an instinctive reverence towards both the leaders of those religions.

Another question that was asked was : "Who at the end of the rounding off of an earth life when the Judgement Picture has been given, gives the absolution - the Light, Azrael and Arrantees, or Buddha?" Because we learnt that the general Pattern of a Conscious Mind, after seeing its Judgement Picture, was first to receive absolution and then the gentle command to go on.

For a Conscious Mind who had in that life belonged to some race or tribe who had no knowledge of Buddha, or of Jesus, the absolution would appear to that Conscious Mind to be given by whatever Spirit of Good it had believed in, during that life. For those who had had knowledge of Buddha or Jesus, the absolution might appear to be given through Them, but this absolution comes from the Light, and the further a Conscious Mind progresses the more aware it is of that source.
